AJ Bird, Director, Senior VP-Business Development

AJ is a proud member of the Deninu K’ue First Nation from Treaty #8 in the Northwest Territories and currently resides in Nova Scotia. She launched her own clean technology company and is the exclusive licensee of an innovative biogas separation and purification technology for deployment for landfill gas and anaerobic digester applications.

As a former Toronto Police officer, AJ has a variety of experience and worked on patrol, plainclothes detail, Indigenous policing, and as a diversity trainer. She is formally educated in investigations and as a hostage negotiator.

After her policing career, AJ attended the University of Regina and did a brief stint at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. She later began her entrepreneurial path and attained an Executive Certificate in Business Negotiations from the University of Notre Dame, is a certified impression management specialist and business etiquette trainer.

AJ has spent many summers fishing on Lac la Ronge, SK as well as time out on the land in all seasons for traditional harvesting in Northern Saskatchewan and also now in Nova Scotia. Her passion for the outdoors began at a young age with her parents and continues to this day. Nova Water of Canada merges AJ's work in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that have adversely impacted our environment and addressing the need for clean water solutions in Indigenous communities, municipalities and industrial operations.

A First Nations man from North Saskatchewan, Carl is an experienced professional and businessman, in senior executive positions and as an owner, in Canada and overseas.

In business owner, Carl has been in civil construction, waste water treatment and project management. Finally, Carl has owned and operated a Capital Markets business, bringing Finance to the First Nations business world, in a sense, leveling the playing field in order to give First Nations access to the Capital Markets.

In Executive Roles, Carl has been a CEO, a CFO and mid-level manager in the public and private sectors in Canada and overseas, with a wide skill set that include strategic and operational policy planning and implementation, accountancy practice, financial management and cost control, and duty to consult requirements with First Nations.

Having been raised in the unspoiled north of Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan, Carl has a deep understanding and respect for the abundances of nature, with Water always the centre of life. Also having seen other places where water is scarce, especially clean water, Carl is very passionate about being one of the Founders of Nova Water of Canada. Like the other founders of this company, Carl is very excited to bring Nova Water to communities and positively impact communities.

Jon Wierda, Founding Director, Chief Financial Executive

Jon is an experienced financial executive who has worked on solving global issues for most of his career. Jon began his professional career as an auditor in the global firm Arthur Andersen. He ascended to the partner level and served in several leadership roles while being entrusted with leading the audits on several leading, global entities. Upon the dissolution of the Andersen firm Jon was recruited into a leadership role at PricewatehouseCoopers and subsequently lead operating units at two other global firms.

He has led the due diligence efforts on, at the time, some of the largest foreign capital raises in the US. Also, he served as Interim CFO at a troubled manufacturing company and returned it to profitability and stability in less than eight months. He also served as Acting CFO at a Caribbean passenger airline changing the culture and leading the organization to its first profitable months since its inception.

Having been fortunate to have traveled globally, both professionally and personally, Jon has developed a keen sense for how people live (and fight for survival daily). The accepted poverty, poor quality of living and housing in many areas have shaped Jon’s approach to charity and community improvement. He has seen the discrimination that exists in public policy and in all people receiving basic needs, on all continents.

Given this experience, he sought to find ways to help solve certain issues that too many citizens face. He is proud to be a founder of Nova Water of Canada and the impact it will have on solving the water crisis for many.

Jon, an avid fisherman, currently resides in Michigan’s upper peninsula. He has fly fished in many lakes and rivers in North America and, based on his time spent on Wollaston Lake in Saskatchewan, believes it is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Debra Donovan, Regional Representative Alberta, Ontario, Quebec

With offices in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Alberta, Debra is the President and sole owner of IPM Integrated Project Management Inc. (IPM), a Certified Aboriginal member of the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business. She has a wide array of industry/community affiliations. Her success is attributed to her ability to ‘herd the cats’ and get the job done.

Debra grew up in a fully bilingual environment in Northern Ontario and is a continuous learner. She holds a Management Accounting accreditation through the CMA program from Saint Mary’s University, has earned her PMP certification as well as her P2RP accreditations. To support these Project Management accreditations, she, among other relevant certifications, has further education in Human Resources, Change Management, Public Consultation, ISO Quality Auditor and ISO Environmental Auditor (2020). Debra has recently completed the OCAP® [1]certification training in August 2020.

Debra’s hybrid approach to business fits well with Nova Water of Canada’s culture and mission and stems from her ability to identify community/client needs, identify the right solution, build the right delivery team and assist in project delivery (business case/project plan prep, project management) as needed.

Trever is a Certified Water and Wastewater Operator. Trever brings in his education and experience in operations and maintenance of small wastewater systems in First Nations Community. As the designer and CEO of Sewllkwe Book Water and Wastewater App, he is an expert in monitoring and management of wastewater systems. Trever is Secwepemc and resides in the interior BC territory of Secwepemctsin. His passion is in water and wastewater innovative solutions that can continue to protect and manage our water resources.
